My #1 Tip for Being “Good” at Meditation (hint: it’s simpler than you think)
Hello my friend,
If you’ve ever felt like you’re not “doing meditation right” because you can’t sit still or clear your mind, let me share my #1 tip:
Meditation doesn’t have to be formal.
As Jon Kabat-Zinn so beautifully reminds us, “Wherever you go, there you are.”
Meditation isn’t about sitting cross-legged in perfect silence for hours. It’s about bringing mindfulness into your day, wherever you are, in whatever you’re doing.
It’s not about escaping life but about being fully present for it.
Here are 5 simple ways to bring meditation into your day:
1️⃣ Walking Meditation
Next time you’re walking, whether it’s on a hike or simply to your car...slow waaaaay down. Feel the ground beneath your feet, notice your breath, and tune into the sensations around you. Let your steps anchor you in the present moment.
2️⃣ Noticing Emotions Without Judgment
When a wave of emotion arises, whether it’s joy, frustration, or anxiety choose to pause and name it. “This is sadness” or “This is gratitude.” No need to fix or fight it, just notice and let it pass like a cloud in the sky.
3️⃣ Staying Present with Loved Ones
When you’re with friends or family, put your phone away and give them your full attention. Listen deeply. Be curious. This is a powerful act of mindfulness and connection.
4️⃣ Body Scan Check-In
Pause for a moment and tune into your body. Notice any tension, ease, or sensations without judgment. Start at the top of your head and move slowly down to your toes, breathing into each part. It’s a simple way to reconnect with yourself in the middle of a busy day.
5️⃣ The Power of a Pause
Before responding to an email, rushing to the next task, or reacting to a situation, pause. Take one deep breath. It’s amazing how this tiny moment of mindfulness can shift your entire day.
Meditation isn’t about perfection—it’s about practice.
This is how you get "good" at meditating.
And the more you weave it into the little moments of your day, the more it becomes a way of life.
So wherever you go today, let mindfulness meet you there.
You might just find that you are the greatest teacher that is always with you.
